Following the success of the Perpetual Motion sculptures at Biennale Interieur 2016, Studio Dessuant Bone and Allaert Aluminium are collaborating on a limited edition design range, Art Industrial. Using the core materials of glass and aluminium, the first piece is The Day Bed, showing for the first time in the Crystallized exhibition at Spazio Nobile until April 15. Philip Bone and Marie Dessuant told TLmag the story behind the work.

TLmag: How has your practice and philosophy developed since you met as Fabrica residents in 2011?
Studio Dessuant Bone: It actually took us three years after leaving Fabrica to start the studio, during which time we worked at different studios and practised different design disciplines in London. Once we opened the studio, Fabrica was and remains a great influence on our approach to design and philosophy. While at Fabrica the idea of collaborating with different designers from different backgrounds, cultures and disciplines was embraced, and that’s something we try and capture in our work, which has multi-disciplinary aspects throughout all projects.

How did the Day Bed, created with Allaert Aluminium and showing at Crystallized, come about?
We worked with Allaert Aluminium on an installation called Perpetual Motion for Biennale Interieur 2016. The project and collaboration were such a success that we knew that we wanted to continue to work together. We decided to create a series of limited-edition pieces of furniture that bridged art and design, and that showcased the great skills, quality and attention to detail in practice at Allaert Aluminium. We wanted the collection to launch with a series of five to six pieces that at their core use glass and aluminium, with a limited number of components embracing the industrial materials. With the first piece in the collection – The Day Bed – in its infancy as a drawing, we were contacted by Lise Coirier at Spazio Nobile as she had seen our previous Perpetual Motion installation at Interieur. She wanted to know if we had something that shared the same philosophy of Perpetual Motion that could be shown at the new Crystallized show. When we explained the idea behind the collection and The Day Bed it seemed like the perfect fit to launch the piece.

How will you take the Day Bed and its Art Industrial range forward?
In creating a series of limited-edition pieces of furniture that bridge art and design, we intend Art Industrial to sum up that relationship, with each piece in the collection as an emotive expression of our collaboration. After the launch of the first collection, we aim to expand the breadth of materials slightly but we will be sure to keep glass and aluminium at its core.
