The Carmignac Collection features American art from the 1960s to the 1980s, with pieces by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as art of the late 20th and early 21st century from the likes of Gerhard Richter, Zhang Huan and El Anatsui.

And now, from June 1 onwards, the pieces will be shared with the public thanks to the opening of the Villa Carmignac on Porquerolles Island, about two hours from Marseille. There, in a Provençal farmhouse that blends into the landscape, is a 1,500-square-metre exhibition space, where natural light comes through a ceiling filled with water. The building is located inside a 15-hectare garden conceived by landscape designer Louis Benech.

The Villa will also display fine art photography, as well as photojournalism work linked to the annual Carmignac Photojournalism Award.

And why Porquerolles for the prime site of the Carmignac Foundation? “As in all legends or initiatory journeys, the voyage to the island is always a dual crossing: one physical and the other mental,” explains Charles Carmignac, the foundation’s director. “It is about crossing over to the other side.”

Porquerolles is accesible by boat, and can be visited on foot or on bicycle —the Villa is a seven-minute walk from the port.
